Government of Canada congratulates EPS Canada and the Canadian electronic industry for its initiative to design, implement and finance a nation-wide program to recover, re-use and recycle post-consumer electronics in an environmentally sound manner

OTTAWA, April 17, 2003

Leading companies within the Canadian electronic industry sector have announced a nation-wide-recycling program for post-consumer electronics, such as personal computers, laptops, printers and televisions to ensure the environmentally sound management of their products. Specifically, this initiative will address the hazardous content and growing quantities of post-consumer electronic equipment bound for final disposal.

The Government of Canada supports industry-led initiatives such as this and will continue to work in partnership with industry and other stakeholders to help foster an industry solution in Canada that is environmentally and economically sound.

Attached, please find a congratulatory letter from the Honourable David Anderson, Minister of the Environment of Canada, the Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Natural Resources Canada, and the Honourable Allan Rock, Minister of Industry Canada, to Mr. Dave Betts, President of Electronics Product Stewardship Canada (EPS Canada).

Dear Mr. Betts:

We are pleased to congratulate the Canadian electronic industry sector-under the leadership of Electronics Product Stewardship Canada, the Information Technology Association of Canada, and Electro-Federation Canada-for its proactive and ongoing voluntary initiative to design, implement and finance a national program to recover, re-use and recycle post-consumer electronics in an environmentally sound manner.

Over the past three years, officials from Environment Canada, Industry Canada and Natural Resources Canada, as well as from the provincial and territorial governments, have been working with the electronic industry sector to better manage end-of-life information technology and consumer electronics in Canada. Electronic-product recovery, led by industry, will place the responsibility on producers and help support a number of environmental and sustainable development objectives. It will help improve the protection of human health and environment, encourage responsible industry stewardship, enhance resource recovery and materials recycling, and strengthen the Canadian economy.

We applaud industry's strong commitment to addressing domestic and international concerns regarding the management of end-of-life electronics.

Our departments will continue to work in partnership with industry and other stakeholders to help foster an industry solution in Canada that is environmentally and economically sound.

Yours sincerely,
